General Info
The Honda NT650 was sold in the US from 1988 to 1991. It features an
all-aluminum frame, single-sided swingarm, and a 52-degree V-twin 647cc engine.
It has the acceleration of a Porsche 911 and the quarter mile time of a Ferrari,
yet because of the torque from a V-twin, this is still a good bike for commuting back and forth to work during the week,
and a great bike to travel the twisty mountain roads on the weekend.
History
When the Hawk was first introduced as a "sporty" standard,
Honda also introduced the CBR "Hurricane" sportbike. The Hurricane
offered more horsepower (inline-4) at a slight increase in price, so the Hawk
didn't fair as well, eventually dying out to make room for the CBR family. With
the recent demand for "naked" standards and non-faired sportbikes, the
Hawk is just as popular. The only real competition in price and performance that
the Hawk has today is the Suzuki SV650, introduced in 1999. The SV650 doesn't
have the single-sided swingarm or same frame design as the Hawk, but it does
have a 1/3 more horsepower and double the cost. The 13-year old Hawk is still
competing with bikes being produced today. Park a completely stock 1988 Hawk
next to a 1998 CBRF3, and it's a guarantee the Hawk will attract more looks.
